RESINS AND ADDITIVES:EXPERT VOICES
Additives in coatings and inks are used in low dosages but have a big impact on coating or ink properties, as well as the final coated product(s). This applies especially in the context of sustainability.
RESINS AND ADDITIVES:PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The great importance of dispersing processes becomes apparent when one tries to formulate a coating without dispersants. The chemical and physical nature of the additives and fillers we use in our coating systems causes the particles to interact with each other. This is desirable for the finished coating, but complicates the manufacturing process. Understanding the principles, one needs something to stop these interactions, at least temporarily.
RESINS AND ADDITIVES:TECHNICAL PAPER
As the paints and coatings industry is moving towards more sustainable and productive technologies, the application of organic resins bearing various alkoxysilane -OSi(OR)x reactive groups is gaining a lot of traction. In this article we discuss how silylated resin technology can be used to produce highly durable coil coatings with improved bending flexibility, surface aspect and corrosion resistance.
MARKET REPORT:THE RAW MATERIALS GAME PART II
The outlook for 2022 was more confident again for the bulk of coatings manufacturers after it had been thought that the Covid-19 pandemic had been overcome and that the worst wasover. However, as of mid-2022, the current global economic outlook is showing signs that the world economy could be on the verge of a new crisis even as it is still recovering from the pandemic.
INDUSTRY NEWS:MARKET MOVES
A short overview on the most important moves within the European coatings industry. You can find more news on markets and companies, raw materials and technologies at www.european-coatings.com
INDUSTRY NEWS:MARKET MOVES
Materials manufacturer Covestro broke ground on two new plants in Shanghai to meet the rising demand for polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) and elastomers. The new facilities represent a combined investment of a mid double-digit million EUR amount. The new plant for PUDs, as well as a further line for polyester resins, from which PUDs are produced, are due to be completed in 2024.
NEWS WORLD:R&D NEWS
A consortium of 10 partners has started Bright Coatings project with the aim to demonstrate the feasibility of the production and use of bio-based aromatics for sustainable alkyd coatings. The whole value chain is included: from bio-waste (Cosun Beet Company, Lenzing and Vertoro), conversion to (aromatic) building blocks (TNO, Biorizon and Relement), resin synthesis (Worlée Chemie), paint formulation (Baril Coatings) to coating application (Straalbedrijf Boxtel and Tobroco Giant).
UV INKJET INKS:ADJUSTING UV-ASSISTED RHEOLOGY
The development of radiation-curing inkjet inks, such as low-migration inks for the packaging industry, represents a demanding process. At the same time, however, this also increases the need for quality assurance and characterisation methods that are adapted to the actual curing process. UVassisted rheology has great potential for this.
TECHNICAL PAPER:BIO-BASED COATINGS
There is growing interest in green chemistry across industry. While humans have a long history of using natural polymers, recent ability to incorporate polymerisable functional groups into small bio-molecules offers potential to extend their applications and produce polymers more in harmony with green principles.
TECHNICAL PAPER:BIO-BASED COATINGS
The climate crisis is driving innovation in many areas, including sustainable isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). Using renewable acetone from bio-based, bio-circular and circular feedstocks can help reduce the CO2 footprint and the global warming potential of numerous products, including polyurethane (PU) coatings.
