BIO-BASED COATINGS:GROWING MARKET SHARE, UNCLEAR DEFINITION
Sustainability and bio-based coatings are on everyone’s lips in the industry. Consumers are demanding sustainable products, and regulations are becoming more and more stringent. However, the market share of bio-based systems is still relatively small. To better understand the status quo, we asked experts, how they see the market for bio-based coatings, where they see growth potential and limiting factors.
TOP INDUSTRY MOVE:GROWING GLOBALLY
Akzo Nobel has been investing heavily in recent months. In addition to capacity expansions in Asia, another focus has been on powder coatings. By Vanessa Bauersachs.

LEGISLATION:MICROPLASTICS IN FOCUS
The EU has adopted a comprehensive restriction on microplastics intentionally added to products (REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XVII, Entry 78). This means that the sale of microplastics and of mixtures to which microplastics have been added and which release them during use is now prohibited. This has far-reaching consequences for manufacturers and distributors of products containing microplastics.

LCM IN STANDARDISED AUTOMATION PROCESSES
Chemistry 4.0 is a new era in the chemical process industry, in which digitalisation, modularisation, sustainability and circular economy play a key role. There is growing interest in the use of process data, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the production process and optimisation of products. A key element of this is MTP.
BRIGHT FUTURE FOR NEW IRON-BASED ALKYD DRIER
This work describes the application of an iron complex in alkyd drying. The active species is only formed after oxidation and irradiation with (visible) light. This means that no anti-skinning agent such as an oxime, is required. Drying times and hardness development are comparable to commercial cobalt-based alkyd driers, while hardness development outperforms commercial cobalt-free driers.
RECONCILING DESIGN CHALLENGES AND HIGH-TECH
Automotive coating formulators have the tricky challenge of developing highly sought-after metallic paints that also allow integrated sensor technology to function. A new technology should enable greater creativity with pearlescent pigments and provide formulators with a radar- transparent coating that delivers on performance even after vehicle repairs.
AUTOMOTIVE COATINGS:SLOWLY RECOVERING
A slight recovery is underway, but we cannot speak of full throttle. The primary growth is in Asia, while Europe is stagnating. Nevertheless, market researchers at PRA are forecasting that the market for automotive OEM coatings will grow by 4.4 % annually until 2027, while the figure for automotive refinish coatings is 2.7 %.
