NEW HAZARD CLASSES
On 20 April 2023, an amendment to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/ 2008 and, with it, new hazard classes, came into force. The latter are being introduced for endocrine disruptors (EDs) and for substances that are persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic (PBT); very persistent, very bioaccumulative (vPvB); persistent, mobile, toxic (PMT); and very persistent, very mobile (vPvM).
EPOXY HARDENERS FOR LOW-EMISSION FLOORINGS
The growing demand for sustainable epoxy flooring systems has led to the development of new amine hardeners to meet increasingly stricter regulations. One approach is the use of ultra-low emission hardeners, based on low-viscosity amine building blocks, which contain minimal organic solvents. Water-borne hardeners that avoid organic solvents are also used to reduce the viscosity of the system. Both technologies enable improvements in performance, return to service and surface quality.
EFFECTS IN AQUEOUS PAINTS
Additives have an influence on the drying process of waterbased paints by affecting the Brownian motion of particles. The additive-dependent viscosity changes help to manipulate effects such as run-off or flow during drying of water-based paints. In addition, a linear correlation between the open time (according to ASTM D7488) and the 2nd decrease in Brownian motion was found. Possibly, with the help of the correlation, the classical ASTM D7488 method can be replaced by ASII measurements (ASII: Adaptive Speckle Imaging Interferometry).

IMPACT OF EXTENDER MINERALS IN UV VARNISH
Extenders such as calcium carbonate, kaolin and talc are often added to inks and varnishes to impart technical benefits and make formulations more cost effective. The optical performance of UV-curing varnishes is key. The optimum mineral type and loading help to control the gloss level without compromising transparency, clarity or mechanical resistance. We analysed a range of fillers to assess their benefits.
TECHNICAL PAPER:LASTING RELEASE
In this paper, we demonstrate how newgeneration silicone-modified hybrid materials can be used to improve the anti-graffiti release properties of conventional polyurethane coating systems. Several silicone technologies will be evaluated using a number of test protocols, including mechanical integrity and chemical resistance characterisation, release properties, outdoor durability, surface tension and microstructural analysis.
MARKET REPORT:HIGH IN PERFORMANCE, HIGH IN SALES
Protective. Anti-fouling and anti-microbial. Self-healing and superhydrophilic. Conductive. Colour shifting and thermochromic. The world of functional coatings is extremely diverse, but each of its segments is gaining more and more traction thanks to increasing demand from the industry and, of course, end consumers.
ADHESIVES: PROSPECTS FOR GROWTH IN VARIOUS AREAS
The European Adhesives and Sealants Market 2023-2028 is FEICA’s eighth edition of the report and covers the period 2023-2028. The report has been prepared by Smithers on behalf of FEICA. What is the situation on the market for adhesives?
“INVEST MORE IN TRAINING”
We conducted a survey among our members on the shortage of skilled workers. 88 % stated that they suffer strongly or very strongly from the lack of employees. Most strongly affected is the area of production, but there is also a lack of staff in logistics and research.
R&D NEWS
Researchers have proposed a melting pre-bonding method for synthesising a durable solvent-free superhydrophobic powder coating with a high water contact angle. With this method, the nano-micro polyester (PE)-SiO2 conglomerates were formed, which involved compaction, heating, and grinding operations to bond the SiO2 nanoparticles with the PE matrix. The resulting PE-5 %SiO2/PE composite coating retains its high WCA of beyond 150 ° after 150 abrasion cycles.
