FUNCTIONAL BLEND FOR TWO-COMPONENT COATINGS
Researchers compared highly functional allophanate crosslinkers with isocyanurate-type polyisocyanates with regard to coating-specific properties such as hardness, chemical resistance, and scratch resistance. They provide higher crosslinking density and better chemical resistance in combination with a comparatively low viscosity.
FUNCTIONAL FILLER:KAOLIN SELECTION FOR LATEX PAINTS
Kaolin is a popular functional filler in European formulations for both interior and exterior latex paint. However, its potential is often overlooked due to concerns about binder demand. The particle size distribution and further processing are useful determinants of value but extensive characterisation and case studies are the only way to assess its performance in formulations.

THE HIDDEN CHAMPIONS OF RHEOLOGICAL ADDITIVES
The rheological profile is a key quality feature of coatings. “Correct” viscosity is critical during their manufacture, storage, transportation and application. Organoclays help to consistently maintain the balance between an increase in viscosity in the lowshear range and good processability in the high-shear range.
2K PU SYSTEMS:NEXT STEP TO A SUSTAINABLE COATING
The circular economy is a new and inclusive economic paradigm that aims to minimise pollution and waste, extend product lifecycles, and enable broad sharing of physical and natural assets . Many of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals can be only achieved through circular economy [2]. As recycling of applied coatings is hardly practical, the biological carbon cycle offers the best option for the circularity of the main organic component of coatings – their binders. The pre-condition is bio-based binders.
LEGISLATION:Sustainability strategy. By Simon Führt, Umco
Corporate sustainability initiatives are coming under increasing public scrutiny, as the spotlight falls on their environmental, social and economic operations. How can a 24-hour emergency number support the UN Sustainable Development Goals?
OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE AT THE LOWEST THICKNESS
When it comes to corrosion protection coatings, sol-gel based formulations have many advantages over conventional organic paints. However, to get the best performance from such formulations they must be cured at high temperatures (around 150 °C), which means that the process is energy-consuming and has a high environmental impact. However, lower curing temperatures, especially at room temperature, normally yield very porous non-protective coatings. Moreover, some large parts cannot be placed in an oven (e. g. a ship’s hull) and others are heat-sensitive substrates (polymers) that deteriorate when heated.
