Within the coatings industry, low-gloss coatings represent a significant fraction of the paints and coatings being sold. The gloss of these coatings is typically controlled using micrometre-sized fillers such as micronised waxes, thermoset polymers, ground inorganic particles, pyrogenic silica, and/or diatomaceous earth. These micrometre-sized filler particles cause surface roughness in the dried coatings, which in turn causes gloss reduction (Figure 1) [1]. A smooth coating surface generally reflects light in a mirror-like fashion, while a rough or textured surface scatters light and gives a diffuse reflection. The size and aspect ratio of these materials determines the length scales of the surface roughness, and as such the gloss. Recently, a theoretical model was developed that relates gloss to the coating surface characteristics .

A mixture of etherified melamine–formaldehyde and acrylic emulsion resin was designed, with the hybrid resin improving the fire retardancy of indoor plywood as well as the CO and CO2 emissions. The water-based hybrid resin exhibited a single curing peak; the need for solvents was reduced. Compared with pure etherified melamine– formaldehyde resin, the hybrid resin had better flame retardancy and produced less pollution.
LEGISLATION:PFAS RESTRICTION PROPOSAL
PFAS are a group of several thousand different highly fluorinated synthetic (man-made) substances, both polymeric and non-polymeric. They are defined as fluorinated substances that contain at least one fully fluorinated methyl or methylene carbon atom (without any H/Cl/Br/I atom attached to it), i.e., with a few noted exceptions, any chemical with at least a perfluorinated methyl group (–CF3) or a perfluorinated methylene group (–CF2–) is a PFAS.

UV PROTECTION OF WATER-BORNE COATINGS
Highly concentrated, emulsified UV stabilisers can have advantages over conventional UVAs and HALS in water-borne coatings. For wood coatings, the advantages can be further enhanced with the new synergistic blend EXP-UVS-5841, and otherwise, more robust durability can be achieved using the bis hydroxy copolymerisable UVA, BTZ-Rx. These illustrate how the coatings industry continues progress towards more environmentally advantaged materials, while maintaining or improving coatings performance.
