WATER-BORNE COATINGS:EXPERT VOICES
The application window of water-borne coatings are primarily limited by drying of the coated film by evaporation of water and film formation by the melting process of polymer droplets. Thus weather conditions will severely impact productivity and coating quality in field applied and ambient cure situations. Water-borne paint formulations tend to have relatively low solid content, where you need to evaporate more water and co-solvent. This means that it takes a conditioned coating-line more energy to get a dry film, which has become a hot topic in the last weeks.
MARKET REPORT:ON THE GROWTH WAVE
The market for water-borne coatings remains interesting and attractive. A growth rate of 5 % is forecast, which is higher than for the paint and coatings industry as a whole. An accelerateddevelopment due to the demand for sustainable coating solutions, supported by regulations, will lead to further growth.
MARKET REPORT:THE GLOBAL PAINT AND COATINGS INDUSTRY 2022
Thus far in 2022, we have seen lockdowns in China; the Russian invasion of Ukraine; raging global inflation, coupled with concomitant efforts to counteract it; shifting attitudes regarding China’s role as a “trading partner”; the significant strengthening of the U.S. dollar; cash flow issues from larger-than-normal orders placed on longer-than-normal lead times due to the unreliable global supply chain over the past 18-20 months; and many more issues causing no end of headaches for the global community, in general, and for the global paint and coatings industry, specifically.
INDUSTRY NEWS:MARKET MOVES
Evonik has opened a new innovation hub at its Allentown, Pennsylvania site in the United States. The hub consists of several state-of-the-art testing and processing labs as well as a pilot plant. It also features a newly designed collaboration space to support a hybrid and creative work environment. The expansion will create 50 jobs for scientists, engineers, and lab technicians in the Lehigh Valley region around Allentown. The Innovation Hub is part of a broader globalisation strategy for Research, Development & Innovation at the Germany-based company.
NEWS WORLD:R&D NEWS
Aiming to enhance the weathering resistance of UV curable coatings, a new study prepared a series of UV-curable composite coatings using TiO2 particles as filler.

ETCC 2022:BROAD SPECTRUM OF TOPICS
The ETCC in Krakow was originally planned for September 2020. However, due to the Corona situation, it was impossible to hold the event at that time. As a result, the event was postponed to 2021 hoping that the situation would allow it. But again, it was not possible to hold the event, and so the third attempt was successful: The ETCC 2022 finally took place from 12 to 14 July 2022.
CARBONATE FILLERS:GETTING THE RATIO RIGHT
Latex paint formulations nearly always contain ground calcium carbonate in two particle sizes. Yet, the particle size ratio instarter formulations usually differs. What does this ratio depend on and how should it be chosen?
EFFECT PIGMENTS:SPARKLING RESULTS WITH SPACER TECHNOLOGY
Pearlescent pigments have a long history in the effect pigments market and are well established in coatings, graphic arts, plastics, and cosmetics applications. An overview can be found in “Special Effect Pigments” by G. Pfaff .
TECHNICAL PAPER:ROSE PETALS, NOT CABBAGE LEAVES
To minimise phyllosilicate limitations such as mineral contamination and intense dispersion, scientists have developed a new product with an open structure. This makes for easier incorporation and efficiency when combined with other additives. Other advantages include improved settling behaviour and greater stability of paints, coatings and plasters.
