POWDER COATINGS:CHALLENGING & PROMISING
For the most part, the powder coatings market rebounded nicely in 2021 from the pandemic low in 2020. The biggest challenge was, and continues to be, raw material pricing and shortages. Despite these challenges, the global outlook for powder coatings remains positive as a result of the ongoing sustainability trend.
TOP INDUSTRY MOVE:COMPLEMENTING THE WOOD COATINGS PORTFOLIO
The U.S.-based paints and coatings producer Sherwin-Williams has recently announced two transactions focusing on Europe and the wood coatings market. The bolt-on acquisitions will strengthening the companiy’s performance coatings segment.
INDUSTRY NEWS:MARKET MOVES
Mipa will take over the business operations of Warnecke & Böhm on 1 January, 2023 and will continue the WB Coatings brand. The product range and customer relations of Warnecke & Böhm are to be organised primarily by Feycolor in Regensburg, which belongs to the Mipa Group. The products are to be manufactured in cooperation between the various Mipa production sites depending on the product range.
NEWS WORLD:R&D NEWS
A recently conducted study presents a novel, lightweight, thermallyconductive, easily processed, mechanically robust, epoxy-based nanocomposite coating. The material was developed with the intention of bringing a multi-domain airwater drone to the deep ocean. In the work, the coating is thoroughly characterised and demonstrated to protect electronics submerged in water at high-pressure benchtop conditions as well as in an actual deep sea mission. The coating was also contrasted against unmodified epoxy as well as commercial syntactic foam and deemed superior for this application.
CEPE ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2022:A ROCKY ROAD
After a two year break the CEPE Annual Conference has taken place for the first time in person since 2019. CEPE Chairman Roald Johannsen and CEPE Managing Director Christel Davidson welcomed more than 130 decision-makers, who took advantage of the exclusive platform for personal and professional exchange.

FUNCTIONAL FILLER:EXTENDED CORROSION PROTECTION
Direct-to-metal coatings with good adhesion, storage stability and corrosion protection pose a challenge for formulators when processing demands and environmental aspects are added on top. Researchers have developed a natural functional filler with low carbon footprint that seeks to improve coating performance and extend corrosion protection.
RENEWABLE MATERIALS:A BIO-BASED ALTERNATIVE FOR METAL COATINGS
Bio-based coatings are in demand as never before. However, the hydrophilicity of bio-based raw materials, in particular, hinders their use as binders in coatings, and native starch shows the typical disadvantages of renewable resources. One way to overcome these obstacles is by modifying starch to degraded higher substituted starch esters. This class also shows potential for metal coatings.
FUNCTIONAL COATINGS:TECHNICAL PAPER
A systematic series of mono-sized polymer beads were developed by increasing the proportion of hard (high Tg) relative to soft (low Tg) monomer in the range 0–36 % by weight. The beads were evaluated in one stiffer and one more compliant coating formulation (CF) to investigate their effect on tactile interaction. Physical characterisation and perceptual evaluations uncovered complex interactions between the two, indicating that systematic manipulation of surfaces can lead to possible future perception delivery, but that there is no one size fits all solution.
FUNCTIONAL COATINGS:PRODUC T OVERVIEW
Easy-to-clean coatings // The cleaning of surfaces can be a time-consuming and cost-intensive task. To obtain a real clean surface, often more than one step of cleaning is necessary. But for visuality, hygiene and functional reasons, clean surfaces are essential. This product overview shows different materials for the formulation of “easy-toclean coatings “.
