FUNCTIONAL COATNGS:EXPERT VOICES
Functional coatings can contribute to sustainability from two points of view: first, by being safe and sustainable by themselves, and second, by providing functionalities that contribute to a more sustainable world. Let me expand a little on these concepts.
FUNCTIONAL COATINGS:TRENDS AND DRIVERS FOR FUNCTIONAL COATINGS
A ChemQuest Group forecast identifies the following applications as value growth leaders: high-value coatings for office furniture, coatings used in the IT industry, some areas of coatings for lighting fixtures, and highly reflective materials. R&D activities are increasingly focused on functional coatings and more colour options in IT equipment, especially phones.
INDUS TRY NEWS:MARKET MOVES
BASF Coatings has inaugurated a new research center (investment amount: EUR 15 million) for electrophoretic dip coating at its headquarters in Münster-Hiltrup, Germany. The company can simulate its customers’ processes and paint systems there. Pre-treated original parts can be coated under the conditions of their individual paint lines in a 2,000- litre dip tank and baked in a chamber oven. In addition, the research center has two ultra-filtration and filtration stands with which the quality and stability of new e-coats can be tested.
NEWS WORLD:R&D NEWS
Scientists have proposed a scalable, self-recoverable CeO2/PDMS hybrid coating that harnesses synergetic benefits from hydrocarbon adsorption of rare earth oxides and hydrocarbon supply by a hydrocarbon-based polymer. It was demonstrated that this hybrid coating substantially outperforms other superhydrophobic surfaces in self-recovery of superhydrophobicity and weather resistance.
EVENT REPORT:RAISE YOUR GLASS
The Association of the European Adhesive & Sealant Industry FEICA celebrated its 50th anniversary in a convivial gathering at the Grand Elysée Hotel, Hamburg, Germany, on 14-16 September 2022. More than 760 participants from 30 countries travelled to the north of Germany to congratulate. The event combined the members meeting of FEICA with the premier conference for the adhesive and sealant industry. By Dr Katrin Vogt.
SURFACE ADSURFACE:ENABLING COMPATIBILITY AND PERMANENCE
Siloxane-based additives play a major role in high-quality coating formulations. The use of organo-modified polysiloxanes in surface additives is growing beyond classical applications in wetting agents and defoamers. Due to their unique interfacial activity, modified siloxanes are invaluable ingredients that improve leveling and decrease cratering while producing smooth film surfaces. This results in functional surface properties such as slip or easy-to-clean (ETC) effects .
STANDARDISATION:ISO 11890-2 REVISITED
A highly robust approach for correctly classifying substances as VOCs or SVOCs has been developed. Based on direct injection of a solvent extract of the coating matrix into a gas chromatograph, identification with a mass selective detector and quantification with a flame ionisation detector, it offers greater accuracy in the determination of VOC and SVOC contents.
COLOUR MEASUREMENT:A NEW APPROACH TO MEASURING BLACK
Black has become indispensable for automobiles, interior furnishings and many other everyday items. Current reports from various automotive paint manufacturers confirm this trend[1]. For this reason, the reliable and reproducible measurement of black colour tones is increasingly important.
TECHNICAL PAPER:MAKING WATER-BORNE EPOXIES MORE USER-FRIENDLY
Water-borne epoxy systems have made great strides in many application fields, offering excellent corrosion protection at low VOC. However, paint formulations are often complicated and there are stillsome limitations. A novel enabling curing agent technology has been developed to address some of these shortcomings and provide formulators with a simpler, more user-friendly solution.
WATER-BORNE COATINGS:PRODUC T OVERVIEW
One of the great challenges of our time is the development of environmentally friendly, sustainable coating systems. This is accompanied above all by the conversion of existing coatings from solvent-based to water-based. This product overview shows various binders for waterbased coating systems.
