BINDERS:LOW-COST EMULSIONS – THERE’S THE RUB!
Low-cost emulsion paints occupy a certain place in the European paints market for interior walls and ceilings. Their producers are faced with the challenges of selecting binders that will ensure proper binding at very high PVC levels. This article introduces the principles behind the formulating band optimising of low-cost emulsion paints on the European market, and looks at case studies for assessing dirt-pick-up resistance and dry-rub resistance. A later article will present the results of wet scrub resistance and the final conclusions.
ALKYD COATINGS:SYNTHESISING A NEW CURE FOR PAINT FORMULATORS
Formulators face drying and hardness challenges with highsolids alkyd resins, which this research seeks to resolve. Using an alternative drier and anti-skinning agent to comply with regulations can negatively impact a coating’s drying properties. As a result of the ever-increasing CO2 price and the desire to avoid petroleumbased products, there has been a sharp increase in research and development work in this field in recent years. In the field of polyurethane chemistry, especially, there is a desire, in addition to sustainability, to avoid hazardous substances, such as phosgene and isocyanates. The reaction pathways shown in Figure 1 compare traditional petroleumbased polyurethane chemistry with the relevant non-isocyanate poly(hydroxy)urethanes (NIPUs).

EXPERT VOICES:BIO-BASED COATINGS
When I look at our own developments at Auro, we have made the greatest progress in the field of water-based paints and glazes. The increase in performance here is to be found in the availability of new biobased binders that did not previously exist for use in bio-based paints. We are now in a position to develop products at the same technical level as in the conventional sector. From our point of view, the weaker area is currently facade coatings, but this may also be due to the fact that we have only just begun to develop new products here and have not yet exhausted the full potential of available raw materials.
